First 3rd-Generation Asiatic Black Bear Discovered on Mt. Jiri

It has been confirmed that a third-generation Asiatic black bear was discovered on Mount Jiri.

The Korea National Park Service said on Wednesday that a bear caught on the southern mountain in September has been confirmed through DNA testing as the third generation of Asiatic black bears released into the wild there more than a decade ago.

It is presumed to be two years old and weighs 56 kilograms. The service said it released the young bear immediately after installing a transmitter on its body.

It marks the first time a third-generation Asiatic black bear was discovered in the mountain. The agency said 47 other bears, either first- or second-generation, also live there.

The first-generation Asiatic black bears were brought from overseas, including Russia and China, in 2004.
