Catholic Church of Korea Expands Anti-Abortion Campaign

The Catholic Church of Korea is expanding its anti-abortion campaign.

The church on Wednesday requested its laity affiliations to begin collecting signatures from the general public in opposition to citizen action to abolish the country's anti-abortion law.

The Catholic Lay Apostolate Council of Korea said last month that it will actively participate in the efforts to maintain the pro-life law.

A member of the council said they will begin a nationwide signature campaign.

On Sunday, 16 dioceses of the Catholic Church of Korea launched the anti-abortion campaign and plan to deliver collected signatures to the Constitutional Court, which is reviewing an appeal to determine whether or not the anti-abortion law goes against the constitution.

The recent controversy over the issue was kindled by a petition posted on the presidential office’s Web site calling for the scrapping of the nation’s abortion ban.
