Aging of Population Deepens in S. Korea

South Korea's registered population stood at 51-point-77 million as of the end of last year, zero-point-16 percent higher than 2016.

According to data by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on Tuesday, women outnumbered men by some 66-thousand-700.

The registered population is increasing each year but the growth rate is slowing.

By age group, people in their 40s accounted for the most at 16-point-eight percent of the total population followed by those in their 50s at 16-point-four percent. Children aged 14 and below account for 13 percent, down zero-point-three percentage points from 2016. South Koreans aged 15 to 64 take up 72-point-seven percent of the total, also down point-four percentage points from the previous year.

Meanwhile, seniors 65 and older account for 14-point-two percent of the country's population. This is zero-point-seven percentage points higher than a year ago and a testament to the ever aging South Korean society.
