Court Freezes Ex-President's Assets over NIS Bribery

A Seoul court has decided to freeze the assets of former President Park Geun-hye who has been additionally charged with receiving bribes of over three-point-six billion won from the National Intelligence Service.

It's the first time that disposal of her assets has been banned since the political scandal involving the impeached president broke out.

On Friday, the Seoul Central District Court accepted prosecutors' request to seize Park's assets worth some five-point-eight billion won which includes her two-point-eight billion-won residence in southern Seoul and three billion won worth of checks in the possession of her lawyer.

Accordingly, the former president will be banned from disposing of the assets until a final ruling is handed down for the bribery case involving the spy agency.

Last week, the prosecution indicted Park for an additional bribery charge for accepting over three-point-six billion won in "special activities funds" from NIS chiefs between May 2013 and July 2016 in collusion with three close aides.
