FTC Penalizes Companies, Former CEOs over Toxic Humidifier Disinfectants

The Fair Trade Commission will slap a total of 134 million won in fines on SK Chemicals, Aekyung Company and E-Mart for violating the Fair Labeling and Advertising Act while manufacturing and selling humidifier disinfectants.

The commission announced its decision on Monday after reexamining various companies that supplied and sold toxic humidifier disinfectants.

It said it would also file complaints against four former CEOs of SK Chemicals and Aekyung Company.

The penalties for each company are 39 million won for SK Chemicals, 88 million for Aekyung, and seven million for E-Mart.

Aekyung sold humidifier disinfectants mainly composed of chloromethylisothiazolinone(CMIT) and methylisothiazolinone(MIT) manufactured by SK Chemicals from October 2002 to April 2013.

From May 2006 to August 2011, E-Mart sold humidifier disinfectants containings CMIT and MIT components also manufactured by SK Chemicals.

The commission determined that the companies had omitted from the labels the fact that the products contained toxic substances.
