Gov't Mulls Mandatory Military Service for Naturalized Koreans

The government is considering making it mandatory for men who’ve acquired naturalized Korean citizenship to serve in the military.

The idea was among basic policies for foreigners and multicultural families for the next five years that the government discussed during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon on Monday.

Currently, naturalized Korean men are not obligated to serve in the military.

The government also plans to devise measures to prevent human rights violations against foreign laborers, including prohibiting employers who committed sexual crimes against foreign workers or provided poor accommodation, from hiring foreign employees.

Moreover, the government plans to attract more high-income, well-educated foreigners to the country.
