Another Victim of Japan's Sexual Slavery Dies, Leaving 30 Survivors

Another South Korean victim of Japan's wartime sexual slavery during World War Two died on Wednesday. She was 88 years old.

The House of Sharing, a housing facility for the victims located in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, announced the elderly woman, identified by her surname Kim, died at around 6:40 a.m. after suffering from a stroke and severe dementia for years.

At the request of her family's wishes, the deceased's identity and the funeral procedures will be kept confidential.

Kim was taken to Okayama, Japan in 1945, when she was 16 years old, and was forced to serve as a sex slave for Japanese soldiers. After South Korea was liberated, Kim returned to her hometown and began living at the House of Sharing since October 2012.

With Kim's passing, only 30 victims of Japan's sex slavery survive to this day. A total of 238 South Korean victims were registered with the government.

She is the second surviving victim to have died this year, after an 89 year-old victim identified as Im died last month.
