Seoul City Scraps Free Public Transport Rule over Fine Dust

Seoul City has eventually scrapped its fine dust reduction policy of providing free public transport on buses and the subway during rush hour.

This comes two months after the measure was first introduced.

The measure was disputed as wasting municipal budget as it cost nearly five billion won a day for the free rides.

The Seoul government said Tuesday it will suspend the measure and instead introduce eight other countermeasures to improve poor air quality.

The city will cooperate with a coalition of 32 civic groups that aims to have one million citizens join the campaign of leaving their cars at home every other day.

Seoul City will also name pollution-prone vehicles as early as before June and discuss with the central government restricting their operation all across the capital city when ultrafine dust advisories are issued.
