Court Sentences 2 Conscientious Objectors to Prison Terms

Two young conscientious objectors have received a prison term for refusing their mandatory military service based on their religious convictions.

The Incheon District Court said on Thursday that it sentenced a 25-year-old man to 18 months in prison for violating the military law.

The convict, who is a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses, a religious denomination that disapproves military training using guns, was notified  in August of last year to join the Army in about a month's time, but refused to do so.

The court also handed an 18-month prison sentence to a 21-year-old man, who did not follow the order to enter the military barracks by last November. He is also a member of the same religious group.
