Ex-Pres. Chun Faces Defamation Trial over Gwangju Uprising

The first trial of a case involving former President Chun Doo-hwan will be held at the Gwangju District Court in the southwestern city on May 28th.

The 87-year-old former leader has been indicted on charges of defaming the deceased victims of the May 1980 pro-democracy uprising that took place in Gwangju.

Chun is not likely to appear for the hearing considering that he didn't show up for the prosecution's questioning. He had submitted a written statement to prosecutors citing his old age and stating that he has nothing to say.

The ex-president was indicted without physical detention on May third on charges of defaming a late Catholic priest who testified to have witnessed shootings from a military helicopter during the military's crackdown on the Gwangju uprising.

In a controversial memoir published last year, Chun claimed the priest had lied, which led to the libel lawsuit filed against him in April last year by families of the priest and victims of the uprising.

The former Army general served as president from 1980 to 1988.
