Authorities have suspended the sale and import of related products after impurities were discovered in a raw medicinal material imported from China that goes into medicine that treats high blood pressure.

According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in Seoul, the European Medicines Agency has confirmed the existence of the substance Nitrosodimethylamine, or NDMA, in Chinese made Valsartan.

The agency announced that products containing NDMA will be recalled.

South Korea has followed suit, enforcing a recall and a ban on related sales and imports as a preventive measure.

NDMA is a second grade carcinogen as designated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Valsartan has been used in making medicine that treats hypertension.

The latest ban applies to 219 products from 82 manufacturers where the use of Valsartan was permitted.

The drug safety ministry advises consumers to immediately report to the Korea Institute of Drug Safety & Risk Management if they experience any abnormal symptoms or side effects.
