Gov't Designates 65 Schools for Enhanced Education on Dokdo

The Education Ministry and the Northeast Asian History Foundation have designated 65 schools for enhanced education of the Dokdo islets as part of efforts to defend and enhance the nation's sovereignty of its territory.

The designated schools include 30 elementary schools, 16 middle schools and 16 high schools.

This year, three South Korean international schools in Japan’s Tokyo, China’s Tianjin and Vietnam’s Ho Chi Mihn were included among the selected schools.

The government plans to provide one million won a year, teaching aids to the schools, and provide three day trips to Dokdo for teachers and students.

The government has aimed to the launch the project since 2008 to counter the Japan’s designation of Takeshima Day by Shimane Prefecture, and its claims to the islets in history textbooks. Takeshima is the Japanese term for Dokdo.
