'Hidden Ferry Owner Aware of Structural Issues of Ill-fated Ship'

Investigators say Yoo Byung-eon, known to be the owner of the sunken Sewol ferry’s operator, was aware of the ferry’s problems in stability and balance.

A joint team of prosecutors and police said Monday that Kim Han-sik, the chief executive of the ferry operator Chonghaejin Marine Company, reported to Yoo early this year that the Sewol’s stability was impaired by the added passenger space and thus overloading could cause problems.

Kim reportedly advised Yoo to sell off the ferry because he believed that the ferry’s stability and balance was a serious problem.

The investigators plan to bring charges of involuntary manslaughter to Yoo given that he is registered as the chairman in Chonghaejin’s personnel list, and he received monthly payments from the company.

Prosecutors on Monday indicted five Chonghaejin officials on charges of involuntary manslaughter and violating ship safety law.
