Exam-Free Semester to Be Lengthened to Full Year

From as early as next year, middle school students in South Korea will have a whole year to explore their future careers without worrying about their grades.

The Education Ministry on Monday announced a plan to revise ordinances under education law to expand the so-called free-semester system into a free-year system.

Currently, the principal of a middle school can designate a free semester, during which the participating students are exempt from paper exams and instead encouraged to experience career-related educational programs. The revision will allow schools to lengthen the period of the program to two consecutive semesters.

The ministry said it will also make an advance notice of a revised rule that will ban high schools from taking into account a student's record for a free year in their admissions process.
