Local Gov'ts Mull Ban on Use of Social Media for After-Hour Work Orders

The National Assembly has been mulling bills that ban companies from using social media to issue work-related orders beyond regular work hours, and now local governments are making similar moves.

The Gwangju Metropolitan Council on Tuesday proposed a revised ordinance to encourage the city's public officials not to make nonemergency work orders to subordinates by telephone, text or social media after hours.

It follows the passage of a similar ordinance by the Seoul Metropolitan Council last week.

Local efforts came after Representative Son Kum-ju from the minor opposition People’s Party proposed a bill last month to prevent private firms from ordering employees to do unpaid overtime by way of messages sent through social media or telephone.

Two similar bills are also pending in the National Assembly.
