Seoul Completes Checkups on Defectors from N. Korea's Nuke Site

The South Korean government has conducted radiation exposure checkups on North Korean defectors coming from areas close to the North’s nuclear test site.

Unification Ministry’s spokesman Baik Tae-hyun said in a regular media briefing Wednesday the checkups on 30 defectors were completed late last month, adding the results are currently being analyzed and will be disclosed to the public later this month.

The defectors are volunteers among 114 recent defectors from Kilju County in North Hamgyong Province, where the North Korean nuclear site Punggye-ri is located.

The ministry earlier announced the plan to conduct the checkups, saying they will help understand the impact of the North’s nuclear tests on the health of the residents in the affected regions.

Meanwhile, Baik declined to comment on the report by Radio Free Asia(RFA) that a derailed train caused massive casualties in Hoeryong in North Hamgyong Province on December first, saying the ministry will look into the media report.
