Fmr Spy Chief Indicted over Secret Investigations into Ex-Presidents

Former director of the National Intelligence Service(NIS) Won Sei-hoon has been referred to trial over allegations he used spy agency funds to conduct secret investigations into two former liberal presidents.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office on Tuesday said it has indicted the former spy chief on charges of bribery and incurring losses to state funds.

Won is accused of spending some 700 million won from funds set aside for North Korea operations between May 2010 and April 2012 to conduct secret probes into overseas slush fund allegations involving former President Kim Dae-jung.

Former head of the National Tax Service Lee Hyun-dong who was at the time the agency's vice chief was earlier indicted for his role in the clandestine operation.

The NIS is also found to have used its funds in another operation to establish ties between former President Roh Moo-hyun and a figure who was implicated in a slot machine scandal in late 2011 centered on the gambling game known as the "Sea Story."
