S. Korea to Double Halal Food Exports by 2017

The government said it aims to double exports of Halal foods to Islamic countries by 2017.

During a meeting promoting trade and investment promotion on Thursday, the government said it plans to boost the exports to one-point-23 billion dollars by 2017 from 680 million dollars last year as part of its goal to create 'the second Middle East boom'.

Halal foods are foods that are allowed under Islamic dietary guidelines. Their global market share was estimated to be one-point-088 trillion dollars in 2012.

To boost exports of halal foods, the government plans to support the Korea Muslim Federation to enable its halal certification to become an international certification.

In addition, the government plans to designate and operate halal exclusive slaughter houses and create a halal food complex in the national food cluster in Iksan.

Along with this, the government also plans to research halal food market trends, promising export items and certification standards to create a manual on halal certification guidelines.
