South Korea will increase the number of international flights this summer.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Friday that it approved 81 domestic and foreign airline companies to operate some three-thousand-900 round-trip flights a week on 336 routes this summer. The amount is up 18 percent from last year.

The ministry said that some 12-hundred of the flights were to and from China, accounting for 31 percent of total international flights. Seventeen percent were flights to and from Japan, followed by routes to and from the U.S.

In particular, South Korean low-cost carriers plan to operate 533 international flights per week this summer from the current 339.

Seven airlines plan to operate some 18-hundred domestic flights a week on 19 routes this summer, or up five percent from the same period last year.

Large-sized companies, including Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, have reduced the number of flight operations while low-cost carriers increased services.
