“March for the Beloved” to be Sung in Unison at May 18th Ceremony

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs says that a ceremony will be held on Thursday to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the May 18th pro-democracy uprising in the southwestern city of Gwangju.

The controversial protest anthem “March for the Beloved” will be sung in unison by all attendees as an official commemorative song at this year’s ceremony.

After May 18th was designated as a commemorative day by the government in 1997, the song was sung by all attendees at government ceremonies marking the democratization movement until 2008. But from 2009 to 2016, the conservative government hired choirs to sing the song at May 18th ceremonies.

After taking office last week, President Moon Jae-in ordered the Veterans Ministry to redesignate the tune as an official song to be sung in unison.

The ministry said that the redesignation demonstrates the president’s determination to honor the spirit of the democratic uprising.
