KITA: US Delays Announcement of Inquiry into Steel Imports

The United States is apparently postponing a decision for now on whether or not it will impose trade restrictions on steel imports, possibly affecting South Korea.

That's according to the Korea International Trade Association(KITA), which said Friday it had learned Washington is still looking at the possibility of applying Section 232 of the U.S. Trade Expansion Act to steel imports.

Under that provision, the U.S. can limit imports of products deemed to pose a threat to the country’s national security.

U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the U.S. Commerce Department in April to review whether it can be applied to the steel imports.

An announcement was expected in late June, but Trump is reportedly deferring a decision while other top priority agenda items are addressed.
