U.S. Emerges as Biggest Regulator of Korean Goods

New data shows that the U.S. has become one of the largest regulators of South Korean products among its trade partners.

The Korea International Trade Association said Wednesday that as of Monday, the U.S. has in place an estimated 31 import restrictions on goods made in South Korea. This matches the number of regulations imposed by India.

U.S. restrictions account for more than 16 percent of the total number of import regulations on Korean goods imposed by countries worldwide.

Most of the U.S. restrictions target steel and metal products with 20 items on the list.

This is far greater than restrictions by Canada and Thailand with nine each.

The grounds for import restrictions were largely based on anti-dumping and safeguard measures to protect local industries.
