FTC Urges 4 Hotel Booking Sites to Change No-refund Clauses

The Fair Trade Commission said Tuesday that it called on four foreign hotel booking Web sites to revise their clauses on no refunds.
The commission urged Agoda, Booking-dot-com, Hotels-dot-com and Expedia to voluntarily change a total of seven clauses deemed unfair.
In their contracts, the online travel agencies have a clause stipulating that consumers cannot change their reservation or get a refund regardless of when they cancel their reservations.
The regulator assessed that if consumers cancel their reservations considerably in advance, the hotel booking sites would be able to resell the canceled accommodations and suffer nearly no losses.
The commission said imposing the total amount of accommodation fees on consumers as penalty for canceling their reservations is excessive and is invalid under the nation’s contract law.
