Exports up to Third Quarter Reach Record Figures

South Korea's exports so far this year have recorded a historic high, as annual trade volume inches closer to one trillion dollars for the first time in three years.

The Trade Ministry said on Wednesday that exports from the first to third quarter of this year reached 430 billion dollars, up 18-point-five percent from a year earlier.

That's the biggest sum recorded for the January-to-September period since 2014, when exports hit 425 billion dollars.

On-year growth of outbound shipments has been accelerating over the past three quarters, up 14-point-seven percent in the first quarter, 16-point-seven percent in the second quarter and 24 percent in the third quarter.

Out of the country's 13 key export items, semiconductors, petrochemicals, steel and machinery drove up the figures.

Chips made up more than 16 percent of all exports, and enjoyed a growth of 53-point-nine percent compared to the year before.

By region, Korea's biggest market was China, where nearly 24 percent of shipments were headed, followed by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) bloc at 16-point-five percent, and the United States at 12 percent.
