KOICA to Develop Filipino Province into Agroforestry Hub

The Korea International Cooperation Agency(KOICA) said Friday it plans to develop the Filipino province of Quirino into an agroforestry region like South Korea’s Daegwallyeong.
The government agency that provides grant-type aid assistance had signed Thursday last week a record of discussions with Quirino province on the second part of the project. Under the document, KOICA will inject nine-and-a-half million dollars through 2022 to develop the landlocked province in the Cagayan Valley region in Luzon into an agroforestry area.
During the first part of the project that began in 2013 and ended this year, KOICA spent five million dollars to come up with an agroforestry model, micro credit projects for farmers as well as building roads and feed factories.
During the second part of the project, KOICA will provide fruit trees to 650 households, build a facility that can house 240 livestock animals and set up an agricultural distribution center dubbed “Q-Life Center.”
Quirino Governor Junie Cua said once the second part of the project is completed successfully, the development project will emerge as a remarkable model for not only the Philippines but the entire world.
