Bird Flu Hits Gyeongsang Provinces
2008-04-30 16:47:56
Avian influenza is spreading to the Gyeongsang provinces after hitting the Jeolla and Gyeonggi regions.

A case of bird flu has been confirmed in Ulsan, South Gyeongsang Province and another case is suspected in Daegu.

The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries found the H-Five-type avian influenza virus at a chicken farm in Ulsan. The ministry will confirm whether the virus is highly pathogenic or not by Thursday.

The death of chickens at the farm in the southeastern coastal city was reported Monday.

Quarantine authorities will cull more than 100 chickens at the infected farm and three neighboring farms.

Inspectors are investigating whether poultry raised in a Daegu home was infected with the disease, as five fowl were found dead there. Five of the remaining fowl at the home tested positive for bird flu.

As of noon on Wednesday, 55 bird flu cases have been reported. Among them 29 were confirmed to be highly pathogenic.
