US Trade Panel Finds Samsung, LG Washers Hurt Domestic Industry

Anchor: The United States International Trade Commission has found that washing machines exported by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are hurting U.S. domestic industry. Safeguard actions, subject to approval by President Donald Trump, could cause Samsung and LG to take a major hit in washing machine exports to the U.S.

Report: The U.S. International Trade Commission(ITC) found on Thursday that washing machines exported by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics pose a threat to U.S. competitors.

The determination is in response to a petition brought by U.S. appliance maker Whirlpool, which sought safeguard restrictions against large home washing machines made by Samsung and LG.

The two companies exported one billion dollars, or around one-point-one trillion won, worth of large residential washers last year.

Whirlpool claimed that Samsung and LG moved manufacturing from South Korea to other countries such as China to avoid anti-dumping duties after the U.S. government determined in 2013 that they illegally dumped washers.

The U.S. trade commission is planning a public hearing on October 19th. Following a vote, it will make a decision on possible remedies next month.

Those remedies could include the imposition of duties or quotas, to be recommended to President Donald Trump in December, after which the president has 60 days to make a decision.

Samsung and LG have both issued statements saying import restrictions could hurt American consumers by limiting choices and raising prices.
