Seoul Open to Restarting Inter-Korean Liaison Office at Truce Village

The government has hinted at its willingness to restart communication with Pyongyang through the official inter-Korean liaison office at the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjom.

Unification Ministry Spokesman Lee Duk-haeng told reporters it is the government’s basic stance that there should be an inter-Korean communication channel to address South-North issues.

He added that the ministry has devised various efforts to restore the dialogue channel but that no particular decision has been made yet.

The comments came amid media reports about the Moon Jae-in government's plan to kick start its North Korea policies by normalizing the hotline at the liaison office which was suspended together with the operations of the Gaeseong Industrial Complex in February of last year.

Lee said there are technically no problems regarding the hotline. He said that though the North is not responding, the ministry’s liaison officers show up at the office in Panmunjom every single day and seek to communicate with the North.
