N. Korea: No Family Reunions without Return of Group of Defectors

North Korea says that it will not hold cross-border reunions of families separated during the Korean War unless South Korea sends home North Korean restaurant employees who defected en masse from China last year.

French news agency AFP quoted an official of North Korea’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland as saying that there is a more important and urgent issue than reunions of separated families.

The official made the remarks in an interview in Pyongyang on Wednesday, noting the group defection of 12 North Korean restaurant employees in China in April last year.

The Pyongyang regime has been demanding that the South immediately return the defectors to the North, calling it an abduction by South Korean intelligence agents.

On June fifth, National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun and the floor leaders of the ruling Democratic Party, and the minor opposition People’s Party and Bareun Party agreed to adopt a resolution calling for holding inter-Korean family reunions on August 15th.
