S. Korea Brushes aside N. Korea’s Demand for Return of Defectors

The Unification Ministry in South Korea has rejected Pyongyang’s demand to return a group of North Korean restaurant employees who defected from China last year.
A ministry official told reporters on Thursday that the families divided by the Korean War are a separate and different issue from North Korean defectors.

He added that the North’s move to link the return of the restaurant employees with cross-border family reunions is incomprehensible, stressing that the issue of family reunions cannot be resolved if more time passes.
On Wednesday, an official with North Korea’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland insisted in an interview with AFP that before proposing inter-Korean family reunions, the South Korean government should immediately send home the 12 North Korean female restaurant workers who defected en masse from China in April last year.
The Unification Ministry official said that the restaurant workers defected to South Korea at their will and they have no plans to make public appearances in media interviews.
