Int’l Aid to N. Korea down 22.4% in 1st Half

The Voice of America(VOA) reports that international aid to North Korea came to 26-point-four million U.S. dollars in the first half of this year, down 22-point-four percent from the same period last year.

Citing statistics from the World Food Program and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, VOA said that the number of nations providing aid to the North has dropped from seven to six during the same period. Switzerland, Sweden, France, Canada and Russia continued to send aid to North Korea, while the U.S. contributed one million U.S. dollars to UNICEF’s projects helping North Koreans. No aid was provided by India and Australia.

The use of UN emergency funds for North Korea decreased 25 percent year-on-year in the first half. The UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund sent six million U.S. dollars of emergency funds to international organizations operating in the North in the first six months of this year.

Food and nourishment aid accounted for 84 percent, or 22-point-three million U.S. dollars, of the total international assistance to North Korea in the first half.
