Unification Minister Says Notice Will be Sent to N. Korea on Surprise Decision

Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon said Seoul will send a notice to North Korea on Pyongyang’s "indefinite postponement" of high-level inter-Korean talks which were initially scheduled for Wednesday.

Cho, who was set to lead South Korea’s delegation to the talks, made the remark to reporters on his way to work on Wednesday.

Asked if Seoul will express regret over Pyongyang’s decision, Cho said the ministry is going over details of the notice.

On the reason the North canceled the talks, Cho said the ministry has not come across anything more than what the North’s notice and state-run media had stated, adding that the ministry will comprehensively assess related conditions.

The North’s Korean Central News Agency(KCNA) cited the Max Thunder drills between the South Korean and U.S. air forces as the reason for the surprise decision.

On the question of whether efforts to implement the Panmunjeom Declaration have hit a major snag, Cho said he does not think so. He said such efforts have just begun and various situations could arise in the process of pursuing denuclearization and establishing peace.
