N. Korea Expresses Discontent Over Remarks By Defected Diplomat

North Korea, which cancelled Wednesday's inter-Korean meeting, has expressed discontent over recent remarks made by a former North Korean diplomat who defected to the South in 2016.

The North's state-run Korean Central News Agency on Wednesday accused the South of neglecting to stop what it called the “scum of the Earth,” from slandering the regime and the two Korean leaders' recent Panmunjeom Declaration in parliament.

This is thought to be a reference to Thae Yong-ho, who unveiled his autobiography earlier this week at a press conference held at the South Korean National Assembly.

During the press conference, Thae expressed skepticism over the possibility of Pyongyang abandoning its nuclear weapons, saying its ultimate goal is to become a nuclear weapons state.

The former diplomat also revealed that at a party meeting in April, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said nuclear weapons are a treasured sword for protecting peace and the strongest assurance that guarantees the most respected and happiest life on Earth.
