UN Human Rights Envoy Visiting S.Korea

U.N. human rights envoy on North Korea Marzuki Darusman is in South Korea to collect information to prepare a report for submission to the U.N. Human Rights Council and the General Assembly.

Darusman arrived in the nation on Sunday and stay until the 25th. During his visit, he will interview officials from the Unification and Justice Ministries, in addition to private groups working for North Korean human rights. He will also pay a visit to Hanawon, a special government-run facility for North Korean escapees.

The U.N. envoy is also known to be planning a private interview with Oh Gil-nam, North Korean escapee and husband of Sin Suk-ja. Sin and her daughters are believed to be detained at a political prison camp in North Korea.

On his last day of this visit, Darusman plans to hold a news conference on the results of the visit in Seoul.

Oh and Sin left South Korea for the North in the 1980s with their daughters but became disillusioned with life there. Oh later managed to escape the country but his wife and daughters were put into a prison camp.

Sin is nicknamed the "daughter of Tongyeong,” as she was born and raised in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province.
