The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea has urged Chinese President Xi Jinping during his trip to Seoul to announce a halt in forced repatriations of North Korean refugees.
The non-governmental organization based in Washington made the call in a statement issued Wednesday.
In the statement, the committee said that China must change its policy of forcibly repatriating North Korean escapees, allowing them instead to go to South Korea.
The committee pointed out that forced returns of the refugees often result in cruel and inhuman treatment, which the UN Commission of Inquiry (COI) regards as crimes against humanity. It added that not only North Korean, but also Chinese officials could be held responsible for the crimes.
