New Ambassador to Japan: Summit is Possible if Japan Reflects on History

South Korea’s new Ambassador to Japan Yoo Heung-soo says that a summit between South Korea and Japan is possible only when Tokyo reflects upon its wartime atrocities and history issues.

Yoo made the remarks on Monday during a meeting with South Korean correspondents in Tokyo.

The ambassador said that he believes a summit is needed to improve bilateral relations, on which President Park Geun-hye also agrees. He added that for the two nations to hold a summit, Japan should first show acts of sincerity on the issue of its wartime sexual slavery and other historical issues.

Yoo said that Seoul and Tokyo share various values in terms of economy and culture and their cooperation is imperative in security issues including North Korea's nuclear issue.

He pledged to help South Korea and Japan make a fresh start towards friendly ties next year, which is the 50th anniversary of their normalized diplomatic relations.
