Former Sex Slavery Victim Urges Japan to Resolve Sex Slavery Issue

An elderly South Korean victim of Japan’s wartime sex slavery has urged Japan to resolve the issue of its use of sex slavery.

Eighty seven-year-old Gil Won-ok made the urge on Saturday at an international conference on the sex slavery issue at a university in Paris, France.

Gil said that she hopes the issue will be resolved before she dies and the truth will come out someday.

In a presentation at the conference, Japanese historian Hirofumi Hayashi, an authority on modern Japanese history, said that more than 500 documents regarding the sex slavery issue were found since the Kono Statement was announced in 1993, but the Japanese government is not acknowledging that the documents prove Japan’s use of sex slavery in the past.

Patricia Viseur Sellers, a special adviser to the International Criminal Court said in her presentation on international criminal law that the prohibition of the slave trade can be applied to the wartime sex slavery issue committed by Japanese troops.
