DMZ Fire Contained after Burning 1 Million ㎡ Forest

A wildfire at the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas has been contained after burning one million square meters of forest over three days.

Authorities said the brush fire was contained at around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday with no casualties.

Although Firefighting helicopters have left the scene, the South Korean military remains on standby as a precaution.

The forest fire broke out at about 600 meters north of the Military Demarcation Line at 11:30 Monday morning. The blaze spread to areas nearby the Dorasan Observatory in Paju and the Joint Security Area. On Tuesday, the fire spread to areas five to six kilometers away from the Daesungdong Village, which is the only village with civilian residents in the southern portion of the DMZ.
