Honda Says Abe Should Acknowledge Comfort Women Issue

United States Congressman Mike Honda says Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe should acknowledge the comfort women issue if he aims to promote female participation in the Japanese workforce.

In an interview with Japan's Sankei Shimbun, Honda said the comfort women matter is a human rights issue.

Honda said Abe is likely to mention positive pending issues such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership at his upcoming address to Congress on April 29. However, he added that if Abe aims to become a leader in the democratic world he should acknowledge Japan's responsibility for its war crimes.

Honda played a key role in getting a resolution on the comfort women issue unanimously passed through the House of Representatives in 2007.
