US State Department Designates N. Korea Tier 3 Human Trafficking Country

The U.S. State Department has assigned the lowest rung, Tier 3, to North Korea regarding human trafficking for a 13th consecutive year.

The 2015 Trafficking in Persons Report, released Monday, says North Korea "does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and is not making significant efforts to do so."

It noted that the North is a "source country for men, women, and children who are subjected to forced labor and sex trafficking."

The report said North Korea forces its people to labor in prison camps or through government contracts abroad and that some estimates put the number of forced laborers working abroad at 50-thousand.

It added that forced labor is part of an "established system of political repression" and that an estimated 80-thousand to 120-thousand prisoners are held in prison camps.
