US Official Refutes Trump’s Asian Security Comments

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Tony Blinken says his country's alliances with South Korea and Japan have "never been stronger" and the two countries were paying considerably for the cost of stationing U.S. troops in their respective countries.

At a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing in Washington on Thursday, Blinken added that Seoul and Tokyo were at the center of U.S. activities in the region.

The remark is seen as a rebuff to Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump’s comments on Wednesday that America's allies should pay more for U.S. defense support.

Blinken also noted that the U.S. renews its defense cost agreements with South Korea every five years and that Washington had conditionally agreed to transfer wartime operational control of South Korean troops to Seoul.
