US Senator Urges Funds for Deployment of THAAD to S. Korea

A U.S. Senator has urged lawmakers to include a clause in a national security bill that would ensure funds for the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense(THAAD) system to South Korea.

Gardner on Thursday proposed amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017 to ensure the funds, citing an imminent and growing threat from North Korea.

He added that North Korea has deployed 700 short-range ballistic missiles, 200 mid-range Rodong missiles and 100 mid-range Musudan missiles, citing publicly available data.

Gardner also said that THAAD does not pose threats to nations near the Korea Peninsula as it is a limited defensive system, apparently referring to claims by China that the battery can be used offensively.

In a press release on the same day, Gardner urged the U.S. to make additional steps to defend against North Korea, which is testing its ballistic missiles more frequently.

He asserted that THAAD’s deployment is an effective complement to the U.S. missile defense capabilities that already exist on the Korean peninsula.

The Republican senator represents the state of Colorado and is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific.
