A Japanese daily says the United States has asked South Korea to express its support for a legal ruling that is expected in The Hague concerning a case between China and the Philippines over rights to waters in the South China Sea.

The Asahi Shimbun daily cited a source on Seoul-Washington relations as saying that the U.S. made an unofficial request that Seoul express its stance before a decision is made by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in a case brought by the Philippines.

The Asahi said that South Korea, however, has turned down the call, saying it's difficult to unveil a position before the ruling.

The report said the U.S. anticipates a positive ruling for the Philippines and tried to bring South Korea onto its side, but Seoul likely reacted as such out of fear that the move could negatively affect relations with China, its largest trading partner that has leverage over North Korea.
