North Korean diplomats have reportedly been caught trying to smuggle undeclared goods such as LED televisions and air conditioners totaling some 210-thousand U.S. dollars into Bangladesh.
According to the Bangladesh Protidin, a Bangladeshi daily, and a diplomatic source in the country on Thursday, the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate(CIID) obtained intelligence that a container brought in from Malaysia by the North Korean embassy contained undeclared goods.
Based on the tip, officials conducted a search on Tuesday. The container, which was declared to carry diplomatic articles and groceries, were found to hold 80-thousand packs of foreign tobacco and Samsung Electronics' LED televisions and air conditioners.
Customs authorities in Bangladesh are also said to be conducting a probe into two other containers held under the North Korean embassy's name that are suspected of carrying undeclared vehicles including Rolls-Royces and BMWs.
