North Korea has been manufacturing banned substances on a state-wide level and giving its athletes the drugs to boost their performances.

Radio Free Asia (RFA) on Saturday quoted a source in Pyongyang as saying that the Sports Science Research Institute under the North's Physical Culture and Sports Ministry operates two plants in Pyongyang's Potong and Sosong districts that produce drugs for athletes.

The drugs are reportedly labeled as tonics or nutritional supplements.

North Korean shooter Kim Jong-su tested positive for drugs and expelled from the 2008 Beijing Olympics and five North Korean athletes also tested positive for steroids in the 2011 Women’s World Cup in Germany.

Olympic gold medalist Kim Un-guk, who finished second in the men’s 62kg division at the world championships in the United States in 2015, was suspended by the International Weightlifting Federation after failing doping tests at the world championships.
