US Defense Secretary Urges USFK to Have 'Fight Tonight' Readiness

U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has urged U.S. Forces Korea to be prepared to “fight tonight” amid the escalated security crisis on the Korean Peninsula following North Korea’s fifth nuclear test.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, a conservative U.S. media outlet, Carter made the remark while explaining U.S. defense policies at the Hoover Institution in Washington on Monday.

Carter said the USFK should have “fight tonight” readiness not because they want to, but because they have to be able and ready to do.

He has frequently cited the slogan, but the Monday remark drew more attention as it came after the North’s fifth nuclear test on September ninth.

Carter assured that the USFK has a strong presence on the Korean Peninsula, that the South Korean military gets stronger every day and another ally Japan is strong as well, although he admitted that “the diplomatic picture is bleak.”

He said the U.S. continues to be "open to an improvement" in diplomatic relations with Russia and China, but that "it’s hard to project that that’s where it’s going.”

The defense secretary emphasized that given the situation, the U.S. needs to maintain its strong deterrence.
