White House Official Negative about S. Korea's Nuclear Armament

A senior White House official says South Korea’s own nuclear armament as a deterrence against North Korea’s nuclear threat does not serve the interests of either Seoul or Washington.

Jon Wolfsthal, senior director for Arms Control and Nonproliferation at the National Security Council(NSC), made the remarks in a meeting with reporters after he made a keynote speech at the fourth US-ROK Dialogue in the U.S. capital.

The former deputy director of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies(CNS) reiterated that South Korea voluntarily joined the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty(NPT), and the treaty is a pillar of the South Korea-U.S. alliance and legally binding.

Wolfsthal was also negative about the redeployment of U.S. tactical nuclear weapons in South Korea, saying it will not enhance deterrence against the North.
