The official Web site of China’s Hongxiang Industrial Development Company was shut down on Thursday amid allegations that it conducted illicit trade with North Korea.
The closure comes two days after the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that the Dandong-based company and its head were being investigated for committing serious economic crimes.
As a key affiliate of China’s Hongxiang Group in Liaoning Province, the company has been suspected of selling to North Korea uranium and other materials essential for the regime’s nuclear development program.
For its investigation, the Chinese government arrested the company’s Chairwoman Ma Xiaohong, other officials and her relatives, and seized its assets.
In China, it is rare that the Web site of a mid-sized company has suddenly disappeared.
