Oxford University came out on top in an annual publication of international university rankings by Britain's Times Higher Education(THE) magazine.
The California Institute of Technology, which had retained the top spot on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for five consecutive years, slipped to second place in the 2016 to 2017 rankings.
Stanford came in third followed by Cambridge, MIT, Harvard, Princeton and Imperial College London. Those rankings remained the same as last year.
Out of South Korean schools, Seoul National University saw its ranking jump from 85th to 72nd and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology(KAIST) from 148th to 89th. Pohang University of Science and Technology(Postech) also climbed 12 slots to rank 104th. A total of six Korean universities were among the top 300.
Out of universities in Asia, the National University of Singapore ranked the highest, coming in at 24th.
The Times Higher Education, a London-based weekly magazine, evaluates around one-thousand world universities and announces the top 400 list based on criteria such as teaching, global reputation, research and citations.
