Italy to Chair UN Committee Monitoring Sanctions Against N. Korea

Italy will chair the UN committee monitoring and supporting a UN Security Council's(UNSC) resolution on sanctions against North Korea from next year.

Radio Free Asia reported Friday that Italy will chair the UNSC's 1718 Sanctions Committee beginning January first, following a two-year term by Spain.

Although the chair rotates every two years, Italy will serve as a non-permanent member of the UNSC for only one year from 2017. The Netherlands will lead the committee from 2018.

The 1718 committee, established by Resolution 1718 endorsed in 2006 following the North's first nuclear test, briefs the UNSC of its activities every 90 days.
